New Explainer Videos: Beyond GDP and Why Beyond GDP Efforts Fail

I have created two new explainer videos introducing key ideas from my recent work on economic measurement and human flourishing.

The first video introduces Beyond GDP: A Balanced Economic Dashboard for Human Flourishing, which proposes a more comprehensive way to assess economic and social progress. Rather than treating GDP as the primary measure of national success, the Balanced Economic Dashboard places GDP within a wider framework that includes inequality, poverty, inflation, externalities, well-being, institutional capacity, and human flourishing.

The second video introduces Why Beyond GDP Efforts Fail, which examines why many attempts to move beyond GDP have struggled to gain traction. The video argues that the problem is not simply a lack of better indicators. It is also a problem of sequencing, implementation, institutional adoption, political feasibility, and the absence of a clear telos for economic measurement.

Together, the two videos offer a concise introduction to my broader argument: moving beyond GDP requires more than adding new indicators. It requires a more coherent architecture for understanding what economies are for, how progress should be measured, and how new measurement systems can realistically be implemented.

The videos are intended for scholars, policymakers, students, and practitioners interested in economic measurement, human flourishing, sustainable development, and institutional reform.
